Entry 2

“Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, ‘Here’s a good seat for you,’ but you say to the poor man, ‘You stand there’ or ‘Sit on the floor by my feet,’ have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?” James 2:2-4 (NIV)

Our senses are how we experience the world around us. With our five sense, we make conclusions about our reality.  However, we think we know it all, but in reality, our senses can fail to give a full picture. Only God is all-knowing; the human body is flawed.

Seeing wealthy people is exciting. It gives the impression that they are awesome and worthy of glory. We can be fascinated by their glow. The people who glow in our eyes may not shine so bright to God. Every person when compared to God’s light is dark. Humans are limited to their senses, while God can view into someone’s heart and soul. Often times, we see what we want to see to relieve our emptiness. Our perception is skewed.

The irony of discrimination is we discriminate against people just like us. We do not wish to associate with our flaws. In addition to not seeing any value in poor people, they also subconsciously remind us of our insecurities. No one wants to be reminded of where they fall short. It puts people’s minds at ease if they believe they are superior than those who struggle; to disassociate with the worst parts of themselves. In our mind it is important to be with people who will do something for us, and whom we strive to be. We want people who are seemingly lower than us to stay low so we can stay raised.

I wonder if God doesn’t laugh sometimes when we judge others…He’s probably thinking, “you’re just as bad, if not worse!” Pride infects all of mankind.
